Awakening III

“Awakening III” is one of those very special themes that lingers, revisits, and insists upon another attempt until the rendering begins to express what is special about that moment or place.  This painting began two years ago on a chilly morning before sunrise (and before breakfast and coffee) with sketches on location as the sun sent horizontal fingers of brilliant yellow light through gaps between the surrounding mountains, illuminating the mists rising from the water.  Most of the scene is in the shadows of the mountain to the east.  The sky is bright and sends its blue-gray light down to reflect from the calm surface.
