In the latitudes north of 60 degrees, the permafrost and extinct glaciers have given the land distinctive shapes. The vegetation (willow, blueberry and mossberry shrubs) is low-growing. The trees, mostly white spruce or black spruce in this area, are sparse and quite short. In this view, autumn is peaking, yet it is still August. On days when there is sunshine, the land glows with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows viewed against the backdrop of violet-blues and blue-grays of rock, water, and sky.
