It was a warm summer day in the south of France. The Mistral (the cooler winds that blow across France toward the Mediterranean) was gusting, causing wavelike ripples through the lavender fields. I was watching the bright, light-colored butterfly making its way along the row of lavender. While perched on the lavender, the gusts would wave it about like a small flag. It landed near me and allowed a close look before moving on again. One wonders how it could manage to fly in these gusts!
This is a Scarce Swallowtail, which is quite common in the south of Europe. It is far less common in Britain, where it was seen by those who named it.
